The Trumpet
By Allison Schmidt '06

As editor of the Trumpet during Fall Term 2004, I was fully able to see the value of the written word on the Wartburg campus. The mission of all newspapers is the same: to tell people what is happening in the world and help them better understand it.

At Wartburg, the Trumpet does this on a local level giving the Wartburg community information about what is happening on campus. It was truly rewarding to realize how much the students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and other friends of the college depend on the Trumpet for information each week.

I also realized the importance of the Trumpet’s role in shedding light on important issues that affect the Wartburg community. The opinions expressed in columns and editorials in the Trumpet play an important role in opening the door to conversation and discussion about these issues.

The oldest of all campus media, the Trumpet is now in its 99th year. Not only does the Trumpet serve readers of today, but it also documents the history of news and events on the Wartburg campus. In a sense, our reporters are the historians of the campus, and their stories provide references for the future.

Writing is only part of the overall production of the newspaper. Other important elements like photography, layout design, advertisements and the editing process are important in creating a quality product each week. But writing is the common thread that ties all of these elements together.

Whether it be providing information, sparking discussion or capturing the history of the college, the Trumpet is a link that ties the Wartburg community together. And as editor, I am proud to have had the opportunity to be a part of such an essential Wartburg College resource.
