The Wartburg men’s and women’s tennis teams traveled to Winona, Minn. last weekend to play in a triangular meet with St. Mary’s University and University of Wisconsin La Crosse.

“UW La Crosse and St. Mary’s are strong programs who have experienced players. Both matches for men and women were full of tough opponents for our teams,” head coach Benjamin Oestreich said.

The men’s teams lost both matches. Against St. Mary’s, they lost by a score of 6-0.
In the second match, La Crosse swept the Knights 9-0.

“We’ve been working on ways to put more pressure on the opponents from serve and serve return, staying in points longer, and maintaining our focus for the entire match,” Oestreich said.

The women were also unsuccessful as they dropped both of their matches. In their first match against La Crosse, the Knights battled the Eagles but came out the losers of a 6-3 score.

“The women need to work on finding more opportunities to take control of points,” Oestreich said.

Both the men and women took on Central College earlier this week. The men lost to the Dutch 7-2. The loss put the Knights at 1-5 in the conference and 8-8 overall.

For the women, Wartburg had a strong spring performance as they defeated Central College 8-1.

The women’s next match will be this Thursday against Luther in Waverly at 4 p.m.

As for the men, the Knights will resume action next Saturday and Sunday as they travel to take on Gustavus.
