The Wartburg women’s golf team finished in fifth place in their home invitational, their first tournament since Winter Break.

The Knights shot 353 on the first day and 349 on day two for a two-day total of 702.

Steph Burns fired a day one round of 81 followed by an 84 on the second day to lead the Knights. Burns finished in a tie for ninth overall.

The weather was not perfect for competition for head coach Monica Severson’s squad, but it was a chance to get out on the course and play.

“We’re thankful that we were able to get two rounds of competition in,” Severson said. “The weather this spring hasn’t started off exceptionally well. At this time of the year when we haven’t been outside too many days and haven’t had many swings and practices we really just need that competition.”

It was also a chance for the team to get back on the course and see what conditions will look like for the NCAA Div. III Golf Championships, which will be held at Centennial Oaks Golf Course in Waverly.

“When it warms up and greens up the greens here will be much faster,” Severson said. “That’s a reason in the beginning that we were thankful that we were able to get this in. We had a few teams that came from a distance to be here wanting to see the course because of the championship.”

The Knights will hit the links again Friday, April 18 when they take on Methodist (N.C.) and the University of Northern Iowa in a triangular meet at Centennial Oaks.
