The Wartburg baseball team opened up the 2008 Iowa Conference portion of their schedule on a high note with a three-game sweep of Luther College Friday and Saturday in Decorah.

The Knights move to 9-9 on the season with the wins, and launch themselves to the top of the conference standings where they sit as the only team still undefeated in conference play.

“We’re to a point now where we’re almost completely healthy,” head coach Joel Holst said. “We’re obviously excited to get things pushed forward in a positive direction. It was critical [to get these wins].”

Friday night saw the rival teams go 13 innings in just over three hours before Aaron Saeugling hit a single to right field, which scored Jerrold Martijn from third base in the top of the 13th. The Norse could not answer the score in the bottom half of the final inning as Wartburg took the 3-2 extra-inning victory.

“For the most part we played pretty solid defense behind good pitching this weekend but I think we can still improve,” Holst said.

The Knights continue conference action as they take on Loras in a three-game series this weekend starting Friday night. Game-time is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Hertel Field with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
