KWAR staff visits New York City

  by James May
  Staff Writer

Five members of the KWAR staff attended the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City Sept. 15-19. Over 1,000 bands from all music genres made appearances in clubs scattered across New York City. There were also representatives of different radio informatino topics, such as radio promotion, digital downloading, Internet sales and distribution, college radio, and the economic state of music business.

Among those attending the event were station manager John Borleske, music director Duane Bierman, assistant music directors Katie Shearn and Katie Kalil, and assistant program director James May.

Hurricane Floyd tried to keep them out of the Big Apple. The group was forced to stay in Peoria, Ill. while the hurricane passed over the New York coastline.

Shearn, a junior, said, "Despite our initial disappointment after having to turn around over Pennsylvania, it made finally getting to New York that much more exciting."

Because they arrived a day late to the music festival, they missed out on keynote speakers on college radio, seeing the band “Live” perform, and the opportunity to view the sneak preview of the forthcoming movie, “Fight Club,” starring Brad Pitt.

"There were so many people there, but most of the representatives still took the time to chat with us, tell us about their companies, and give us information on how we can improve our own station, KWAR," said sophomore Kalil. "I learned a lot and I’m looking forward to hopefully going next year, without any problems from hurricanes!"

Kalil said, "Seeing The Push Stars had to be the highlight of the trip for me. The band sounded great, and afterwards they hung out with the crowd. We got to meet them, and they were really nice guys. I had a great night that I’ll never forget."

The Push Stars is a band signed by Capitol Records and has a new CD in stores now. The band is just one of hundreds in play rotation on KWAR.
