City Council denies housing request pending further information

Wartburg College Plant Superintendent John Wuertz did not receive the answer he was looking for Monday evening. The Waverly City Council tabled a zoning request made by the college for a new student residential complex on Fifth Avenue, NW. The complex would house 88 students and provide an additional 98 parking spots.

The proposal has already passed through the city planning and zoning board, but was tabled by the city council due to concern regarding the results of the project on the Dry Run. Wuertz said water retention is planned to slow the water flow into the Dry Run. Council members Gary Boorom, Fred Ribich and Elizabeth Hartman all expressed concern about the potential effects of the housing project.

There was no objection by the council that the college needs to expand the housing on-campus. However, the council did agree that a decision could not be made until Wartburg provides more information. Wuertz withdrew the request until further information could be obtained and presented to the City Council.

Council members said the project would not be curbed if the water issue could be resolved, but Wuertz did not know when the necessary information would be available.
