Welcome to the ACS webpage! ACS is the Wartburg College student affiliate of the American Chemical Society--also known as the Chemistry Club. Not all of our 30+ members are chemistry majors (we have welcomed music, psychology, math, computer science, elementary education, and other majors too), but we all get a kick out of chemistry! Who Are We?The Wartburg College Chemistry Club serves as the local student chapter of the American Chemical Society. We serve to promote a greater understanding of chemistry, to help the community through tutoring, demonstrations and support, and to help the ACS by encouraging undergraduate research in chemistry, undergraduate attendance of ACS meetings and by helping students learn and enjoy science. What is the ACS?The American Chemical Society is the largest scientific society (161,000 members) that is actively involved in promoting chemistry and providing a support base for chemists and others in chemistry-related fields to share ideas, find jobs, and enrich their educations. For more information about the ACS, visit their information page here. What does the club do?The American Chemical Society participates in a variety of fun and educational activities that benefit Wartburg College and the surrounding communities. We sell balloons at the Homecoming parade every year, we have demonstration shows for area sixth grade students, and we sell lab coats to biology and chemistry students. We have regular monthly meetings and a social activity once a year, such as ice skating. We eat a lot of pizza and have a lot of fun making friends and educating all at the same time. ACS is involved in various community service events on campus. Our biggest annual project is a series of free chemistry demonstration shows, presented to area 6th graders. We invite teachers to bus their students to Wartburg and we present an hour-long demonstration of various (fun) chemical reactions such as the Egg Suck, Electric Pickle, Explosive Balloons, and even Flaming Underwear! All demonstrations are both theatrical and informative, as we present the scientific basis for what the students see.
